Kate and David Bagy here to support M.P. Scott Andrews on Bill C-464

Scott Andrews, Member of Parliament for Avalon is pleased to have Kate and David Bagby join him today in support of Bill C-464. M.P. Scott Andrews introduced Bill C-464 on October 23rd and will move into second reading beginning Dec 4th. Bill C-464 when enacted will amend the Criminal Code to provide that the detention of an accused in custody may be justified where it is necessary for the protection or safety of the accused’s minor children.

"In late March, I received an invitation to attend a special screening of the documentary "Dear Zachary" for Senators and Members of Parliament in Ottawa. At that time, I had the pleasure to meet and talk with Kate and David and Kurt Kuenne for the first time. The documentary and listening to their personal stories had a profound impact. It was shortly after that I knew my first ever Private Member’s Bill would try and advance the efforts of bail reform." said Andrews.

Andrews further stated, "Bill C-464 is not about Scott Andrews. Bill C-464 is an accomplishment that reflects the strength and determination of the parents and grandparents of the late Andrew and Zachary. It is in their memory that we move this Bill forward and do everything in our power to prevent this from happening to another family."

"We are pleased to be back in Newfoundland and it is our pleasure to be here in support of MP Scott’s efforts to bring about legislative change concerning bail reform in Canada. This is a gigantic step forward in our lobbying efforts and M.P. Scott stepped up to the plate to become a champion for our cause. This is a key step in our goal since Zachary's murder - change in bail law to reduce the chance of a recurrence of this horror." said David Bagby.

Bagby went on to say, "We are hoping the general public will get behind this initiative and we’ll see Bill C-464 receive royal assent. We have suffered a tremendous personal loss that has changed our lives forever and it is now our goal to prevent this from happening to another family."

"I’m confident that we can achieve all-party support for Bill C-464 in the House of Commons. We also have the support of Senator Tommy Banks to sponsor the Bill in the Senate. Senator Banks has been a real supporter from the beginning and I look forward to his work in the Senate when the time arises. We do this in memory of Andrew and Zachary and will remember these efforts as their impact on our lives." said M.P. Scott Andrews.
